1. Date check Always check the manufacturing date on the bag. Cement older than 3 months starts losing strength. Never use cement older than 6 months under any circumstances.
2. Colour check Good cement is grey with a slight greenish tinge. Brownish or yellowish colour indicates moisture damage or poor quality raw material.
3. Lump check Open the bag and feel the cement. It should flow freely like fine powder. Any lumps — even small ones — indicate moisture has already initiated hydration. Reject lumpy cement.
4. Float test Throw a small handful of cement into a bucket of water. Good cement should float for a few seconds before slowly sinking. If it sinks immediately and heavily, quality is suspect.
